"Language and Image As Empowerment" Written by Anthony Costa, Philosophy Teacher, Roberto Clemente High School, Chicago, IL. Students used text to construct art installations to explore ethical issues that affect themselves and others. Students were exposed to self-taught artists featured at Intuit, such as Jesse Howard, Sister Gertrude Morgan, and Howard Finster. They also looked at the relationship that these self-taught artists have with contemporary artists, like Barbara Krueger and Jenny Holzer. The students were asked to analyze the impact that image and text can have on its viewer and what ethical questions are posed by the artists.
