This unit includes resources, such as worksheets, on Microscopes for high school biology students.
This unit is part of the Developing Biology course.
This resource was reviewed using the Curriki Review rubric and received an overall Curriki Review System rating of 2, as of 2008-03-28.
These resources are a good start for a unit on microscopes. With some modifications, more detail and added resources this could become an exemplary unit. Here are a few suggestions.
- A PowerPoint presentation that explains the parts and use of the microscope would help familiarize students with the microscope before they actually handled one.
- As stated in the other review the Microscopes Basics page could use objectives for each microscope activity.
- The work sheets need to be localized. While all schools require name and date on work, not all schools run on a period system or use a pod group. Name, date and space to add more would be best.
-This Unit could be used for High School or Jr. High with little or no modification. The curriculum for microscope use is similar for both age groups.
- The addition of online resources would help any schools with limited or no access to microscopes. Check out http://www.udel.edu/biology/ketcham/microscope/scope.html
-There are also a few grammatical errors here and there but we are science teachers not English teachers, right?
-The addition of a lab that allows the students to look at objects of their own choosing as well as required slides would increase interest and student buy-in.
Thanks for starting what I hope will become an excellent unit on microscopes.
