Analysis of African Country Student and PowerPoint Presentation Creation
I didn’t really view the assignment as active at first because I was used to the idea of a teacher presenting the information and the student debating it or something. However, this assignment is active in allowing the kids to actually be the sole contributors to their education on the topic of African continents. However, my concern would be that they would just regurgitate the information that they find until she brought in the opportunity of students cooking a traditional dish.
The students are only allotted the opportunity to be constructive through a powerpoint presentation. I think allowing more opportunities like a video or a skit incorporating their information would take it a step further. This gets kids out of the habit of always presenting in a powerpoint format especially if they aren’t powerpoint savvy or have the resources to do so.
The overview does hint at students relating this project to themselves but I don’t see that followed through very well in the entire assignment. The assignment seems very linear ( choose a country, find it’s facts, presents it’s fact, maybe cook a dish). I don’t see kids really embodying the country in a different way that would allow them to understand the residents.
In relation to cooperative, the students are utilizing each other to critique their overall project. However, making it a group project could make the presentation more authentic because there are a lot of other heads on the topic of country
The level of integration seems to be Adoption. The kids are instructed to use a specific technology (powerpoint) to just present.
This assignment is very clear and concise which is awesome. Some suggestions I would make is to...
Make it a group project. This assignment would be a great opportunity for students to get to know each other and learn about a countries different characteristics together. The way I see it, it’s just going to be an assignment where everyone lines up to regurgitate information that they aren’t relating to themselves. Instead of making it such a information find, break the assignment into different topics from different countries. This allows different things to be presented to the class each time. An example of this would be, Group 1: How has the geography of Ethiopia contributed to it’s burial customs? Group 2: How has the geography of Nigeria contributed to it’s popularity in internationally? Question 2 would relate to oil and oil to America. That would make an instant connection to America and relatable to the kids. These countries are so far and vastly different, so a repetition of the same questions can muddle a lot of the information that can be life changing.
Another suggestion would be to give the kids freedom to present the information different ways than just a powerpoint. Once again we don’t want the kids to sit through two classes of presentations.
