In this online exhibition from the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, students explore the ways that the nation's growing numbers of steamships, roads, canals, and railroads-including the first transcontinental railroad in 1869-created coast-to-coast networks of connection during the 1800s. Students will also, examine an historical map of America in 1876-the country's centennial year. This section of the exhibition demonstrates the development of United States' transportation systems into an increasingly national network.
