Rough Drafttudents will get a very involved look at all of the processes that go into whether a certain species adapts or goes extinct after a large cataclysmic event. Students will be lectured on the many factors that influence the process of adaptation and will then be broken up into groups to further explore the process itself by choosing an organism from a list of the plants and animals that survived the K–T extinction event which occurred 65.5 million years ago and tracing in detail the organism's specific traits and adaptations which allowed it to live through the event itself and eventually go on to dominate the earth's biosphere. Then, each group will create a fictional species that they believe would have had the best chance of surviving the event.
