If you are in a particular country, e.g. Kenya and want to convert KES ( Kenyan currency) into foreign currency, e.g. USD (US currency), we say you are selling the money to the bank but when converting foreign currency, e.g. USD into KES, we say you are buying money from the bank. So, when converting USD into KES, you multiply the value of the dollars by the buying rate of exchange and when converting KES into USD, you simply multiply by the selling rate of exchange. At times, the mean rate is used which equals to (buying rate+ selling rate) /2 and then you multiply by the value of currency, e.g. USD/KES you have.
