This lesson should be hosted at an organic farm, ideally one that is familiar with the Earth Charter, and already actively promoting it’s principles. It is also possible to do this lesson plan while creating a garden with the students in their own schoolyard or elsewhere. The lesson is intended to both introduce the Earth Charter and the concepts of sustainable development to the students in terms that they can easily grasp and understand, while also providing a real life example of the principles of the Earth Charter “in action” on the farm. The lesson plan includes brief guidelines and tips on how to introduce the charter to young people, outlines a few learning activities and games that can be introduced, and discussion questions to facilitate reflection. This lesson can be used independently, or as one in a series of “Earth Charter in Action” modules, it can also use The Earth Charter itself, or one of the adaptations of the Earth Charter for children that are available online or within this series in Curriki.
