Paid app on iOS
The RPM of an engine is precisely related to the pitch of the sound made by that engine. This app listens to the engine, and then uses Fourier Transforms and Autocorrelation to measure the pitch of the sound and display the calculated RPM.
This app will not work if the engine sounds are too muffled or unstable, or if there are extraneous noises that mask the sound of the engine.
You can set a narrow search range to improve the reliability of the RPM measurement.
The software is configurable for 2-cycle and 4-cycle engines and includes a generic configuration for unusual cases, such as a reduction gear. The overall RPM range is 400 to 90,000 RPM.
