Extended Vocabulary Practice: Verbal-Visual Word AssociationHopkins and Bean (1998/99) recommended using this activity where students create vocabulary boxes, which each contain four square. They write the structural element in the upper left square, its definition in the bottom left, the target word in the upper right and a visual representation of the target word in the lower right. Hopkins and Bean found that this approach personalized vocabulary learning in such a way that students were able to “use their strengths as well as address their weaknesses with respect to word learning and that it fostered independent problem-solving skills.
