The purpose of this CAP is to study the CCS in relation to the 9th grade English curriculum. Our purpose was to break the standards down to best understand their intent and implications on the present 9th grade curriculum and thus to best understand our role as educators. The CAP is set up as follows: First is the introduction, which covers a variety of concerns when dealing with the CCS, and is separated into different categories, such as “Key Design Features,” etc.; next are the standards themselves. Within the new standards are various sub-categories, which I have noted in bold text. Under these headings is plain text, which denotes the text of the CCS document itself. Below this is the interpretation of the standard in italic font. The interpretation of the standard is the work of all people on the CAP committee and is meant to be both interpretive and reactionary.
