In this activity, middle school students compare foot sizes of boys versus girls. In sharing the data, students will “compute measures of center (mean, median), quartiles (first, second, and third quartiles) and spread (range, Interquartile Range (IQR), standard deviation).” This investigation follows the four components of statistical problem solving put forth in the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) Report as well as the Common Core Standards for Mathematics (Grade 7). The teacher materials are detailed and clear. The lessons include a detailed overview and instructions, suggestions for student assessment and extensions, student handouts, and answer keys. This well-organized and thoughtfully prepared lesson is immediately useful in the middle school math / science classroom.
