In this culminating activity, middle school students work collaboratively to build a 3D model of the human body systems (skeletal, respiratory, circulatory, digestive, excretory) in order to identify and describe the main components of each system, as well as describe their interconnectedness. This lesson plan clearly describes expected outcomes and student requirements, along with a suggested timeline of completion to help students to manage their time. At the end of the lesson plan, there is a rubric, a self- and group- evaluation, and reflection sheet, all clearly aligned with the curricular goals of the activity. As written, this activity is well-organized and highly-structured and, depending on a teacher’s school community, may be further enriched by allowing for some student free choice in adding additional content of student interest. Also, the activity assumes a certain amount of prior knowledge on the part of the teacher, as there is no formal “answer key” provided.
