Background: The students will discover the special properties of the regular polygons and learn which of these shapes form the regular tessellations by trial and error. The students use the information they discover to then apply this knowledge to create accurate geometric diagrams of the regular tessellations of equilateral triangles, squares, and hexagons using vector-based graphics software (Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape (http://www.inkscape.org/)). As a culmination, students will create Flash animation that demonstrates their understanding of how the Demi-regular tessellations are formed. Students are guided through a series of simple-to-complex explorations of the geometric concepts of the regualr polygons and tessellations. Angles, rotation, conguent sides and software tools will be explored.

After visiting the "Totally Tessellated" Thinkquest site (http://library.thinkquest.org/16661/of.regular.polygons/index.html) to learn about the regular, semi-regular and demi-regular tessellations, the students will be asked to create illustrations that demonstrate their understanding of how the tessellations are formed.
