Best done as a first (or second) lesson in a series unit. Students will use the quick computing power of spreadsheets to see if various infinite series have limits or sum to infinity. The teacher is creating mystery for the students, who will ask WHY does this series add up to 1? WHY does that series add up to e? Why would this other series add up to pi over 4? This creates a cognitive need to study how to construct infinite series using algebra, differentiation and integration.
