A suggestion for this standard choc. chip mining activity. How about oatmeal raisin cookies. Mine for raisins, and oatflakes(you will have to check ahead of time - homemade always have a flakes and some store brands.. This might show that one rock type (the cookie) can have more than one type of mineral that is of value along with some tailings that have to be disposed of. You can even attach a price per raisin and per flake. Working with your math teacher you could sell the cookies for X dollars each. Students could borrow the money at 12% interest. After mining, students could figure out how much profit they made. How many cookies it would take a million dollars. Some students would lose money they would have to calculate how much they would owe on their loan.
