In this unit on Musica 4th Grade will explore the history/origins, instruments, and dance steps associated with a musical genre from their assigned Spanish-speaking Caribbean island. The Scorpions will be comparing and contrasting Salsa and Reggaeton from Puerto Rico. The Tarantulas will be contrasting Bachata and Merengue from the Dominican Republic. During the first few weeks of the unit, students will be exploring basic background information on both the Caribbean as well as their assigned country through segments of Discovery Education's streaming video series The Geography of the Carribean and Urban and Rural Puerto Rico. Students will watch these video segments, answer Reflection Questions that I have written, and discuss the many countries from around the globe that have influenced the music of the Caribbean.In the following week we will learn how to ask about someone's musical preferences based on the rhythm, instruments, and dance moves of that genre. El ritmo los instrumentos el baile We will then move into a series of webquests in which students will be guided through a series of websites exploring the rhythms, instruments, and origins of each genre of music. They will complete a task sheet charting how their assigned genres are similar and different. At the end of this series of units students will create a short presentation teaching the class about the history, origins, costumes, and instruments of their favorite genre of all the styles of music that we have covered. This presentation can take the form of storytelling (ie; telling the story of how salsa came to be), a cooking show (ie: the recipe for bachata), etc. In the second half of the unit we will be learning basic Body vocabulary and basic commands associated with dancing. Students will research the dance steps of their musical genre and conduct a Dance Class for the rest of the students on how to dance to their assigned musical genre. Students will be able to: Identify the ethnic origins of their assigned dance style. Identify the instruments of their assigned musical style. Identify the basic dance steps of their assigned genre Identify the basic rhythms of their assigned genre Compare and contrast two of their assigned genres Use body vocabulary and basic command vocabulary to teach another class how to perform their assigned dance style.
