Based on evidence provided by the 1909 soundings and careful analysis of Peary's photographs, National Geographic stood by Peary's claim to be the first person to reach the North Pole. In 1989, National Geographic Society President Gilbert Grosvenor, center, joined Canadian oceanographer Joe MacInnis (left) and filmmaker Al Giddings on a historic return to the pole. Grosvenor himself made a dive beneath 2 meters (6 feet) of Arctic ice, and proudly displayed Peary's expedition flag.
