This lessons builds on the previous lesson on tessellations as part of a larger unit on Geometry. As a culmination and continuation of the study of basic plane geometry by the 7th grade, this unit explores the world of the regular geometric solids known as the Platonic solids (tetrahedron, hexahedron or cube, octahedron, dodecahedron and icosahedron). Students will explore the basic geometry by using vector-based graphics software (Freehand and GeoSketchPad) to construct the nets of the Platonic solids and then build them using plain paper and a system of tabs through trial-and-error and informed predictions for placement of the tabs to aid in construction.
