This activity asks learners to identify and map their reading identities. The purpose of this activity is to help the classroom community to see the range of expertises learners bring to reading assignments and to support collaborative meaning-making of challenging texts. The idea behind this activity is for students to think about their identities and practices as readers and writers of texts. As students engage in the reading/writing they do in school and out, they can become more aware of their motives for reading/writing and the kinds of practices and identities those require. The activity can be extended to design a short video clip in which students introduce themselves (individually, or as a class) to other students in the project by sharing those identities and practices. The videos then provide a way for students to get to know one another through their reading and writing interests, and to analyze the literacy identities and practices of the group.
