Welcome to the Physics of Sailing Project, a six-week high school Physics project designed in a project-based learning (PBL) format. The project focuses on the application of Newton’s Laws in sailboat design. Over a six-week period, this project mixes team-based student inquiry, direct instruction, and teacher- or student-directed activities.
Sponsor Curriki is grateful for the tremendous support of our sponsor, Oracle. Special thanks to Grant Simmer, Oracle Team USA, CEO and to Chris Ray for generously donating his photographs.
Using home construction as the context, students explore the processes of thermodynamics and energy efficiency. Each student will choose a region of the USA and a season (summer or winter) and design an energy efficient home. Through the course of designing their homes, students investigate the forms of heat transfer in homes, energy efficient strategies available to reduce heat transfer, and the differences in climate within our country.
Incredible phenomena are happening in your body all the time. But have you ever stopped to think about what keeps you breathing, how information travels from your senses to your brain instantly, or any of the other amazing things that constantly happen to keep you alive? Now you can jump inside the human body and participate in these physiological processes to help Fred outrun danger in the woods.
In Code Fred: Survival Mode, you'll play mini-games to send adrenaline to help Fred run faster, build a blood clot to help heal a wolf bite, prioritize energy intake to the most critical organs, and even fight bacteria invaders after Fred gets sneezed on in the woods. Each mini-game helps Fred run a little farther toward safety. Lose one of these challenges, and Fred's body won't be leaving the woods.
