This 282 page document from Bellmore-Merrick School District contains units for grades 7-12 with samples of written assignments, lesson plans, activities and materials designed to help teachers meet the Common Core Learning Standards. Students will write in different genres at every grade level – creative/expressive, expository, literary analysis and persuasive. At the 7th grade level, students study simple poetry, cartoons, song, etc. to identify rhyme, repetition, onomatopoeia and alliteration – or personification, character analysis, symbolism; then they are asked to apply what they have learned and create their own works. A variety of graphic organizers and learning strategies are included in the lesson plans. Current events articles from a variety of sources, i.e. New York Times and links to different sites are included. Other elements are explored in similar ways. The materials used are excellent, the rubrics complete and the lesson plans are outstanding. At the upper levels, students write memoir, conduct research, respond to art and literary theory/criticism and ultimately, experience a wide variety of instruction in all genres of writing.
