I really like that the first thing the students have to do is a poll that definitely attracts their attention. The fact that all answered Facebook is a hook because they will be interesting in hearing you speak about Facebook. However, the option of using the teacher's computer could take up a lot of time if there are a lot of students without computers. I like that the students have to reflect individually on what they learned during the lesson. Your resourcesare very good.
I really enjoy your lesson plan. It is very thorough. Something that may help others is may be breaking down each section with an anticipated required amount time for the students. I may give some portion of this for homework:)
That infographic is fabulous! And so is this entire lesson. The news is an important part of civics, and Lord knows kids are on social networking sites all the time, so this lesson is fantastic for combining these two things. I think students will really enjoy this lesson, as it incorporates something they use every day and it may get them to think more closely and be a little wary of taking what they read at face value. Absolutely love it! And I love the idea of them using their phones for a poll too, by the way. If they're going to have them, might as well use them in the classroom, right?
Brandon, I love your lesson! I think your lesson hits on an important topic- are news media sites legitimate sources to receive our news? Since more students are relying on these types of sites for news, I think it is very important for them to learn if it is a realiable source.
I love that you have students placed in all sorts of grouping. Student-student interaction is VERY important and can help keep students involved in the lesson.
I love the idea of students taking a poll using the poll survey. However, I would caution that you maybe allow students to do this before class starts because if you have many students that do not have access, class time may be wasted waiting on these students to take the poll on your computer. Most students have cell phones, but not all have cell phones with internet access.
The activity is awesome! I love how every student has a role in the group so they can remain actively involved during class time. GREAT JOB!
Brandon, I really took alot away from this lesson. I never even thought to use the student polling method in my class, but not I definitely want to try that! It gives students an opportunity to voice their opinions and really brings the lesson a nice personal touch. That being said, I think one area of improvement is in the opening of the class. I would hope you school is lax in regards to cell phone use, but the students using your computer might create a bit of excitement at the beginning of the class. I'm sure you will rock at classroom management, but when I was at GHS teachers had to stand in the hall during bells, and my students would personally go wild if I had them use my computer. Other than that, great lesson, you had everything else on lock!
