Use a sunlamp to test how long it takes ultraviolet (UV) rays to burn human skin. Measure how much protection is gained by applying SPF 10 sunscreen. Notice that fair skin gets sunburnt more quickly than other skin types. Use experimental data to confirm the relationship between sun protection factor (SPF) and exposure time. Work out the SPF of some sunscreens. Calculate safe exposure times for a range of skin types and sunscreens.
