Almost all of my students learned the common elements and their symbols using this pop quiz method. I liked to do this the first day of school rather than drone on about class rules. This pop quiz method can be used throughout the year for students to learn anything that requires rote memory. An important addition to this activity is a reflective piece, asking students to identify the steps they used to learn this information. They can use these steps to learn other rote materials. Reflections can increase student learning. If you are not familiar with reflections on learning see http://www.curriki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Coll_VirginiaMaloneet/ReflectionsonLearning
