Lesson PLan 2We are an AP Latin class that is in the middle of translating book 7 of Caesar's Gallic War, A semi-autobiographical account of Caesar's campaigns in Gaul against various barbarian tribes. As a prelude to translation of the rest of the work, a visual simulation of a specific battle itself, the Siege of Gergovia, will be provided through a software engine that can create simulations of virtually any battle, including details right down to the specific terrain, time of day, and army composition. The engine even attributes values for troop morale and exhaustion over the course of the battle that bear themselves out in how well the troops fight, whether or not they will rout from fear, etc. This visual simulation of the battle itself will serve to elucidate and set the scene as a part of book 7 of Caesar's work as a whole and create a frame of reference while students begin translating, and hopefully will help them to remember the important passages as they take their AP Exam.
