This pilot will establish the Calculate2Gether Pilot in the mathematics department at Brazosport College. Ioana Agut (lead applicant) and Dr. Calin Agut (partner) will act as project leaders and oversee all activities. Project activities will include the purchase of a classroom set of 40 graphing calculators to be shared by both instructors for use in their college-level math courses during the fall and spring 2013-2014 semesters. Students enrolled in these courses will have access to these calculators during instruction, in-class group work, and during in-class tests and quizzes. Five calculators will be house at the BC Math Lab for lending to group and independent study. Any student enrolled in a math course will have access to those devices.
Focus in the classroom was on engaging students in hands-on learning of math concepts presented by the instructors. Both instructors and students lead the class in problem sets (using a projection screen), and all students in the class were be able to follow along on their own device. To further explore the material, students worked in groups and discovered solutions together. Groups will then present their calculation methods to the class which will allow students to act as teachers and their peers to critique their methods and/or offer different solutions. Lessons will encourage students not only to use the calculators as a learning tool but to delve further into the math concepts being presented to them by asking in-depth questions and also former out-of-class study groups with their peers.
Uploaded are the handouts, exercises, and problem sets presented to students in these courses which include calculator tips.
