In this lesson students reflect on the importance of the first five years of life for all later development. Students will spend some time thinking about what every child needs during this time in order to grow and thrive and begin school ready to learn. Following a brief introduction to the Child Survival Revolution, students will learn about the calculation of under-five mortality rates (U5MR) and why this statistic is such an important indicator of a country’s commitment to children. Using real data, students will have opportunities to read and interpret graphs and charts as well as calculate changes in the child survival rates in different regions around the world.
