This six part resource is for 10th grade Honors World History and Literature. Prior knowledge of the Industrial Revolution, Imperialism in China, Communism, the Soviet Union, the Cold War, Mao and The Great Leap Forward is prerequisite. The study’s focus is to “increase student awareness of the universality of human needs and wants while investigating the cultural and political differences that either help or hinder their attainment.” The first part is a 10 day plan for a literature circle for Such is This World, while also under discussing other major related works. Students learn skills in critical reading, writing and thinking, analysis, synthesis, evaluation, creativity, independence, assertiveness, initiative, and an appreciation for diversity – while working cooperatively. This lesson cites standards and is well laid out. Other lessons are: a reference guide citing sources for the Cultural Revolution, Tiananmen Square, Propaganda, Human Rights, Industrialization, and Pollution; a PPT of the roles and responsibilities for the Lit Circle; a description of the Lit Circle task and accompanying rubric; and prep sheets for the Lit Circle’s director and historian.
