In this activity, middle school students try predicting when 30 seconds has passed. Students will explore biases in data collection, create box plots for the class results and calculate measures of center and spread. This investigation follows the four components of statistical problem solving put forth in the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) Report as well as the Common Core Standards for Mathematics in Grades 6 - 7. The teacher materials are detailed and clear. The lessons include a detailed overview and instructions, suggestions for student assessment and extensions, and answer keys. This well-organized and thoughtfully prepared lesson is immediately useful in the middle school math / science classroom.
