Purpose: have a sensory exploration of wheat in two forms 1)ground form 2)grain form
Materials: two bowls, hand wheat grinder, wheat grains
Activity: This activity is best done during center time. Have the children divided into groups of 4. With each group have them begin by feeling the grain form of the wheat in a bowl. Each child will then have the opportunity to grind the wheat in the wheat grinder by cranking the arm of the grinder around. The second bowl is used to catch the ground wheat as it comes out. Count out loud each time they crank the grinder (when they have done so 10 times the next child gets a turn). Once the children have had a chance to watch the wheat be ground have them feel the wheat in its new form. They can put one hand in each bowl and feel the difference of each kind. Have them talk about what each form of the wheat feels like. Have them describe the differences they feel, see and hear.
