Gavin Dykes

Member, Advisory Board

Associate Director, The Innovation Unit UK

Gavin advises on technology and education for a range of organisations. For example, he leads the Innovation Unit’s international and technology based work. Over the last five years he has also chaired the steering group for Moving Young Minds on behalf of the UK Government's Department for Education and Skills. Moving Young Minds is an Annual Seminar for Ministers of Education. The focus of the seminar is use of technology in school aged education. In 2008 the seminar attracted participation by 67 countries and 57 ministers of education. He is currently planning the 2009 event.

Gavin is an advisor and consultant to the British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (BECTA), developing the agency’s international strategy, and advising on international issues. He is also a member of BECTA’s research advisory panel. BECTA is the lead government agency for technology in education.

Working with Professor Stephen Heppell, and with universities and schools in Australia, Hong Kong, Sweden, Ireland, Wales and Scotland, Gavin is developing an innovative doctoral programme for teachers. In addition, Gavin has wide experience of advising governments and other organisations on the development of technology for learning. For example, Gavin was engaged by the Maltese government to develop their e-learning strategy which was published early in February 2008.

Previously, Gavin developed the future view for Curriculum Online, the way in which the Department for Education and Skills in England helped to bring digital content into the hands of teachers. He worked in Further Education in England, among other things acting as an advisor for the Football Association Premier League and being responsible for development of their web based learning system for young professional footballers. He played a leading role in development of the Cisco Networking Academy Program in the UK and developed and taught a range of technology related courses in Higher and Further Education.

Gavin is motivated by the opportunities that learning can bring to all and believes that co-design by learners and educational professionals provide real engagement, fun and excitement in education. Technology, when used well, can make a wonderful contribution to that engagement, fun and excitement, as well as learners' success.
