Lesson 8: THE SKETCHUP

Introduction:

The online tutorials are a great place to start learning SketchUp basics. As a classroom is a fairly simple geometric shape, students should be able to present their classroom designs as 3D digital renderings.

Group Size: Any

Learning Objectives:

Learn to produce the final step in design: presentation. How do you communicate your design ideas using a tool like Sketchup?  All students will have their own model to share with the class.

Materials:

Computer, internet access, free download of Google SketchUp

Procedures:

Before starting, the students should have basic dimensions and design ideas for what they want to render.  (This can be obtained in two ways depending on the age group and level of the students; students can either take measurements of their classroom, or the teacher could provide basic measurements to be used as guidelines for the project.)

Begin by downloading Google SketchUp onto each computer. Follow the instructions outlined in the basic tutorial provided by Google. Students will then produce their individual models.

Assessment:

Students will be evaluated based on the completeness and accurateness of their 3d model.
