Poetry Diagnostic
Directions: This is to see how much you already know about poetry. This WILL be graded on your effort. Do your best!Carefully read the poem below and answer the questions.
"Ars Poetica" by Archibald Macleish
A poem should be palpable and mute
As a globed fruit,
Dumb
As old medallions to the thumb,
Silent as the sleeve-worn stone
Of casement ledges where the moss has grown
A poem should be wordless
As the flight of birds.
A poem should be motionless in time
As the moon climbs,
Leaving, as the moon releases
Twig by twig the night-entangled trees,
Leaving, as the moon behind the winter leaves,
Memory by memory the mind
A poem should be motionless in time
As the moon climbs.
A poem should be equal to:
Not true.
For all the history of grief
An empty doorway and a maple leaf.
For love
The leaning grasses and two lights above the sea--
A poem should not mean
But be.

you can do the same with other alphabets too so that the child is able to recognise the print form of the letters. The child has to say the letters aloud and only circle a particular letter (in this case A) Activity 2 : Exposure to alphabet and corresponding sounds . Go through each of the alphabets and familiarise the child with phonics. Next on a sheet of paper write the alphabets ( in random order )using both upper and lowercase. Draw a cap over some of the alphabets. Write only about 8 letters on each row and use large font size. Ask the child to say the name of the letter when he/she reads the alphabet with the cap and in absence of the cap ask the child to sound the letter.
