Color Mixing

Summary:

Students will get a chance to experiment what happens when different colors are mixed together.  They will discover the primary and secondary colors. 

Lasting Ideas & Results:

Students will have an understanding of how mixing colors can create new colors.
 

Essential Question(s):

Which colors mix to make new colors?

Day 1Students will experiment by mixing different primary colors to make new colors.
Day 2 Overlapping different colors of cellophane paper to get new colors.

Paint mixingThese projects are more about the process and not the product.  They will experiment mixing different colors to make new ones, if they make the new colors, they accomplished the goal.

Pre-Requisite Knowledge & Skills:

They are learning about color mixing in their core classes this week.
 

Procedures:

Paint Mixing Project 1:

  1. Students will get a piece of fingerpaint paper and a popsical stick.
  2. The teacher will come around and put a spoonful of each of the primary color paints on their paper.
  3. She will instruct them "scoop a little yellow and red and mix them on a clean spot and someone raise their hand and tell us what they've made."
  4. We will do that for all the primary color combinations.
  5. Once we've mixed those, they are free to try other combinations and can use their stick to spread their paint and draw designs into it.

 

Cellophane Overlapping Project 2:

  1. Students will each get a piece of paper and a tray with different color pieces of cellophane. 
  2. They can overlap them to get new colors. 
  3. As they overlap they will use a glue stick to attach the combinations on their paper.
  4. They can make as many combinations as they want and are encouraged to cover the paper or make a picture out of them.
Materials:

Project 1:

  • fingerpaint paper
  • popsical sticks
  • red, yellow, blue paint 
Project 2:

  • white paper
  • colored cellophane paper
  • glue sticks 
Modifications, Adaptations, & Accommodations:

These projects are about experimentation and the teacher will check to make sure students are on task and getting the results they should.
 

Reflection:

Not all the classes will be able to do the second project because of the Memorial Day holiday.
