AP English Language and Composition Free Response Questions 2006

The Hazlitt prompt "On the Want of Money" from the 2006 AP exam is a perfect compliment to the satire unit. I time the students in class to simulate an AP testing experience. The satirical essay examines the "horrible" effects that middle-class life has upon people.

This resource is part of the Satire Unit collection.

Essay Test on Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl

Directions:  Answer one of the three pairs questions below (A and B, C and D, or E and F).  You must also answer the question at the bottom of the page about the historical background of the diary.  Use complete sentences and answer in essay form.  Your grade will depend upon the length of your answers, the accuracy of your judgments, and your ability to defend those judgments with specific details, examples, and quotations from the play.  This should be an example of your best writing skills.

One of the themes of Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl is "Good vs. Evil."

A.) How do you see both good and evil on these three levels?

  • the society as a whole during WWII
  • the eight people in hiding
  • Anne Frank herself
To answer this question, you must find evidence (details, examples, quotations) from the Diary to explain how both good and evil exist on all three levels.

B.) React to Anne’s statement, “…I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are really good at heart.” Would you be able to write this statement under the same circumstances that Anne and her family experienced?  Given today’s world situation, do you agree that people are basically good at heart?  Give examples of good or evil today to support your opinion.

A second theme in the diary is the importance of courage and hope.

C.) How do you see examples of both courage and hope in the thoughts, words, or actions of these individuals?

  • Mr. Frank
  • Miep and the other "helpers"
  • Anne Frank

D.) Who do you think was the most courageous individual?  Why? Use evidence from the Diary to support your answers.

Another theme in the diary is the need that people have for freedom.

E.) Give specific examples from the Diary that illustrate people’s need for freedom.  Include the following in your response.

  • Anne’s statements about thinking herself outside
  • the will to survive by the eight occupants of the Secret Annexe
F.) How did the residents of the Secret Annexe find "freedom" even while being in hiding?  Were their attempts at finding "freedom" successful?

You must answer the following question.
Explain the historical background of Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl.  Include information about the causes of WWII, Hitler’s power and influence, prejudice at that time, lost privileges of the Jews, and how these factors affected Anne’s family.
