Students are given a worksheet to build skills that will help with solving equations and systems of equations. This sheet involves no numbers, just symbols, so that students are not distracted by the nomenclature of algebraic expressions, and can focus on building equation solving intuition. The columns of problems get increasingly more challenging as they go on. It is suggested that the students work on the more difficult problems in pairs or small groups.
Students use a set of numbers to create problems that meet a set of criteria. For example,in the first activity, students must use three of the four digits 2,3, 5, and 8 to create and solve a problem that finds a product between 150 and 200.
Students are given a scenario where they need to figure out, from a table of data, what lengths of shoe laces to make and which lengths should go with which shoes.
Students are put into groups and each group is given one card from the sheet attached. Each card contains a different clue to the number pattern the students are investigating. Groups are allowed to read their cards out loud, but they may not show their cards to any other group. By talking to all of the other groups, each student will be able to determine the seventh number in the pattern.
A classic puzzle. The object is to move matchsticks to get a cherry to move from the inside of a glass to the outside.
Use the last five minutes of each class (all levels) daily, to involve all students in communicating while doing energizers (nonroutine, problem-solving activities.)
