This lesson walks students through a classic optimization problem involving building the maximum area of a triangle, expressed in terms of an angle. The lesson uses a worksheet in The Geometers Sketchpad.
This activity has students discover how small changes in the measurements of a right triangle can influence the whole triangle. Students track data and analyze changes in order to look for patterns. Students then use these patterns to develop a function that describes how the changes relate to one another.
An interesting problem that has students find the area of a particular section of a circle that resembles the pupil of a snake eye. The result is rather surprising, because the area does not involve pi.
