Reviewer Comments:
This unit was written for 6th grade, but may be adapted for use with older students. The introductory information is clear and includes objectives and assessment ideas. Although the standards are from Illinois, the Enduring Understandings would be widely applicable. There are some site-specific references to textbooks and “scilinks” which would require a user to either locate these resources or create some alternatives. Included are two web “scavenger hunts” which basically amount to a list of questions students answer from the included websites. Overall, the resource would benefit from the inclusion of an example of “split note taking” and some answer keys. In the final project, students plot volcanoes & earthquakes using USGS data then create a brochure or PowerPoint presentation including this information, the effect on people’s lives and emergency response information. There is an emphasis on proper work citation and there are supplementary links throughout the assignment. The final project is excellent, multi-faceted, and immediately useful in the classroom.
