Travels with Music: China
Description:The videos of Winnie Wong represent one whole unit of the 30 units of videos available on Travels with Music Series One. The videos of Wei Hou and Hong Wang are each just a short selection from the videos available for each of these artists. Travels with Music Series One is available online at www.travelswithmusic.org. There are nearly 300 video clips in this first series of the Travels with Music program that profiles master musicians from 15 cultures around the world: USA/Blues, Trinidad, Peru, Chile, Senegal, Nigeria, Morocco, Bulgaria/Rom, Israel, Arabic/Lebanon, Pakistan, India, Indonesia/Java, Philippines, and China. The whole program is available at the online store (www.travelswithmusic.org) and can be purchased for online access or on interactive DVD-ROM for computers or on DVD-video for television. Travels with Music: Hong Wang, Chinese string instrument
Description:Hong Wang plays many Chinese traditional instruments. He is the founder and leader of Melody of China, an ensemble of top international performers on Chinese traditional instruments. A dedicated researcher in his specialized field, Mr. Wang has made numerous recordings of Chinese folk music, often traveling to remote villages to document his country's rich heritage of ancient regional music. He has performed and lectured in the Netherlands, Singapore, Hong Kong, U.S.A., Japan, and Germany. In this video Hong Wang plays the erhu, which is his main instrument but which is only one of a great number of instruments that he has mastered. Both in 1993 and 1995, he was awarded first prize in the Youth Solo Instrument Competition in Beijing. He has performed all over China and on many of China's most popular TV stations, and with many important Chinese touring music ensembles. In this video he plays the bamboo flute, which is only one of his many instruments.
