Travels with Music: Ruman Shopov plays Rom tambura

Rumen Shopov is a concertmaster and tambura soloist of the famous Nevrokopski Ensemble for National Songs and Dances, the oldest Bulgarian professional folk ensemble. Shopov is also a representative of the ancient Rom or Romani musical tradition. The Rom people, who are sometimes called “gypsies” by outsiders, came originally from India a thousand years ago and are now spread through much of Europe and beyond. There are more videos featuring Rumen Shopov and Rom music in Travels with Music, Series One, available online at www.travelswithmusic.org

Travels with Music: Romani Music: Yuri Yunakov #2

Yuri Yunakov is a Turkish-Bulgarian Rom. The Rom people are sometimes called “gypsies” by outsiders. And since the Rom themselves have been outsiders in many cultures, in order to survive they have had to become masters of the music that audiences in each culture want to hear. Yuri Yunakov is one of the founders of Bulgaria's wildly popular "wedding music" style. A saxophone player of incredible skill, his command of the style's fast-paced, complicated, and shifting time signatures has been known to cause whole rooms full of people to get up and dance “as one.” This is the second of two videos on Yuri Yunakov. There are more videos on him and his work on Travels with Music (www.travelswithmusic.org)>
