Travels with Music: India
Description:India is represented in Travels with Music Series One by two masters of North Indian music (called Hindustani music). Swapan Chaudhuri plays the tabla (drum), and Alam Khan plays the sarod (or sarode, a stringed instrument). Travels with Music Series One is available online at www.travelswithmusic.org. There are nearly 300 video clips in this first series of the Travels with Music program that profiles master musicians from 15 cultures around the world: USA/Blues, Trinidad, Peru, Chile, Senegal, Nigeria, Morocco, Bulgaria/Rom, Israel, Arabic/Lebanon, Pakistan, India, Indonesia/Java, Philippines, and China. The whole program is available at the online store (www.travelswithmusic.org) and can be purchased for online access or on interactive DVD-ROM for computers or on DVD-video for television.

Pandit Chaudhuri's remarkable style is based on the long training he received from his Guru, Santosh Krishna Biswas of Calcutta. Swapan has performed throughout Europe, North America, and Asia as a solo musician and as an accompanist, with such masters as Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and Pandit Ravi Shankar.

He has since accompanied his father in India at the Jodhpur Palace for the King and Royal family, and to sold-out audiences all over Europe and India. Alam Kahn continues to perform North Indian classical music and now teaches as well at the Ali Akbar College of Music.
