Liquid Labs
Description:This unit contains a series of 4 labs investigating the different properties of four different liquids - water, alcohol, corn syrup and soap. At the conclusion of the individual labs, students will work cooperatively to design their own experiments in the Paper Towel Challenge. The real focus here is on the scientific process, even more than the content.

Introductory Activities for the (formal) Scientific Method
Description:Of course, I am not advocating that the scientific method takes the place of scientific inquiry, however, if you are looking for a few good activities for reviewing variables, graphs, and procedures....

Lab 1: Drop Size (Diameter)
Description:In this experiment, students will predict, observe and compare the drop size (using diameter) of four liquids – alcohol, soap, water, and corn syrup. Students will be supplied with droppers, glass slides, a grid with which to measure, and four liquids.

Lab 2: Heaping Drops (on a Penny)
Description:In this experiment, students will predict, observe and compare how drops will “heap” on a penny. Students will get one set of liquids per group, pennies, and a set of droppers.

Lab 3: Different Surfaces
Description:In this experiment, students will predict, observe and compare the drop size of four liquids (alcohol, soap, water, and corn syrup) on different surfaces (waxed paper and plastic wrap). Students will be supplied with droppers, two grid sheets (height and diameter) with which to measure, and four liquids.

Lab 4: Distant Drops
Description:In this experiment, students will predict, observe and compare the drop size of four liquids (alcohol, soap, water, and corn syrup) dropped from different heights. Students will be supplied with droppers, grid sheets with which to measure, a ruler and four liquids.

Lab 5: Racing Drops
Description:In this experiment, students will predict, observe and compare the rate at which the piles of liquids “race” down a surface. Students will be supplied with droppers, glass slides, waxed paper and four liquids. Students will need to supply a watch with a second hand or look at the clock.

THE PAPER TOWEL CHALLENGE
Description:Students will conclude this liquids unit (see Liquid Labs) by designing their own experiment to determine which brand of paper towel is best. Final conclusions must be based on and supported by data involving absorbency, strength, cost effectiveness. In addition, each student is responsible for a post-evaluation and paper towel advertisement at the conclusion of the challenge.
