What is algebraic thinking? Is all mathematical thinking also algebraic thinking? How can teachers encourage the development of algebraic thinking in their students? This 8-week, 40-hour course for teachers of middle grades mathematics for grades 6 - 9 will address these and other questions about the nature of algebraic thinking. The course will help you to: • Recognize and build on opportunities for algebraic thinking in a variety of mathematics contexts; • Analyze students' algebraic thinking; and • Pose questions that encourage the development of algebraic thinking.
