Teaching linear equations through running a small business

Notes on pacing

All of the lessons in this unit are designed for 45-minute classes, unless otherwise stated in the description.  There are in fact several lessons which require multiple 45-minute class periods to complete.

A general calendar for the project would look like the following (keeping in mind that each class will vary according to student attributes, teacher needs, etc.):

Topic 1:  3-4 days

Topic 2:  2.5 to 3 weeks

Topic 3:  1.5 weeks

Topic 4:  2 to 2.5 weeks

Topic 5:  2 weeks (although you can cover other material during this time)

Topic 6:  1 week

Another factor that will affect the pacing of this project is whether or not you choose to assign any of it as homework.  I have written it under the assumption that all work will be completed in class.  Assigning any amount as homework will obviously reduce the class time required.

Topic 1: Introduction to Economics and to the Project

Topic 2: Graphing 2-variable linear equations

Topic 3: Linear Regression

Topic 4: Solving systems of linear equations

Topic 5: Running the business

Topic 6: Evaluating and presenting results
