4. Describe what it means to find a specific percent of a number, using real-life examples.

5. Use models and pictures to relate concepts of ratio, proportion and percent, including percents less than 1 and greater than 100.

Benchmark:

D: Use models and pictures to relate concepts of ratio, proportion and percent.

Indicators:

5. Use models and pictures to relate concepts of ratio, proportion and percent, including percents less than 1 and greater than 100.

9. Give examples of how ratios are used to represent comparisons; e.g., part-to-part, part-to-whole, whole-to-part.

Integrated Academic Content Standard:

Standard: Social Studies Skills and Methods

Benchmark:

B. Organize historical information in text or graphic format and analyze the information in order to draw conclusions.

Indicator:

4. Read and interpret pictographs, bar graphs, line graphs, circle graphs, tables and flow charts.

Technology Academic Content Standard:

3. Technology for Productivity Applications:

Students learn the operations of technology through the usage of technology and productivity tools.

Benchmark:

C. Use productivity tools to produce creative works, to prepare publications and to construct technology-enhanced models.

Grade Level Indicators:

1. Use content-specific tools, software and simulations to support learning and research.

2. Apply technology resources to create an educational project.

Technology Academic Content Standard:

4. Technology and Communication Applications:

Students use an array of technologies and apply design concepts to communicate with multiple audiences, acquire and disseminate information and enhance learning.

Benchmark:

B. Develop, publish and present information in a format that is appropriate for content and audience.

Grade Level Indicators:

1. Create and publish information in printed form (e.g., use software to produce homework assignments, reports, flyers, newsletters).

2. Develop and publish information in electronic form (e.g., slide presentations, multimedia products, Web materials).

Guiding Question:

Can students create models representing fractions, decimals, and percents.

Procedures:

Procedure: 1. Explain to students that the computer offers the opportunity to learn about fractions, decimals, and percents using interactive applets. Begin the lesson by having students visit the following three web sites: http://www.shodor.org/interactivate/activities/fracsorter/index.html

http://illuminations.nctm.org/tools/tool_detail.aspx?id=11

http://www.interactivestuff.org/sums4fun/shade.html 2. After interacting with the web sites, ask students to go to the following web site to analyze data presented in a circle graph and put answers on their worksheets. http://www.shodor.org/interactivate/activities/piecharttool/index.html 3. Explain to students how easy it is to use the computer for representation of fractions, decimals, and percents. Open the Accessories Paint program and show an example of how to create a shape and represent it as a fraction and decimal. Show students the Calculator in Accessories to use for computation.

4. Have students begin work using the student worksheet and using the Paint program in Accessories.

Extension:
Students can spend more time at the web sites interacting with the applets. Teachers can also use this as an opportunity to work on creating graphs in Excel.

Assessment:

Assessment: Students will be assessed on their answers to the circle graph analysis and their Paint program drawings.
