Vocabulary Study with Patricia Polacco Unit

This week long resource uses the Semantic impressions strategy and the Possible Sentences strategy to engage in meaningful vocabulary study. A bank of words from a book by Patricia Polacco is presented to students. Students are asked if they know each word or the teacher defines and uses each word in a sentence. Students are then asked to create their own story – or sentences - using the words – either as a whole group, small group, with partners or individually. Eventually, the Polacco text is read and students listen for the vocabulary words they have just learned. Students are also asked to make text to self connections with the books, engage in character study and a rich internet scavenger hunt about Polacco.
