WASHINGTON, DC, October 17, 2007 – NRTA: AARP’s Educator Community and Curriki, a non-profit open source curriculum repository and community, have joined forces to bring high-quality learning resources to students around the world. Retired educators will be encouraged to contribute and help develop educational tools and resources, and participate in an education community that is helping to change teaching and learning in the 21st century. Current offerings on Curriki range from lesson plans, assessments and media clips to complete textbooks, all available at no cost. These resources support teachers, schools, and students worldwide.

The collaboration between Curriki and AARP will bring together educators who are subject matter experts to share their curriculum, review content curricula, and help train teachers. By working closely with other experts in the United States and abroad, the collaborative effort ensures that the Curriki resources and materials will meet educational standards in each country. The collaboration’s activities support the challenging United Nations Millennium goal of guaranteeing an education for every child worldwide by 2015.

AARP’s educator-members will help expand and develop Curriki's collection of high-quality content. Educators will vet and screen the content of submissions for accuracy and appropriateness for educational application.

According to Bill Novelli, AARP's Chief Executive Officer, "This new collaboration offers a wonderful opportunity for our educator-members to share their valuable talents and insights with today’s teachers. Experienced educators can create positive educational outcomes by sharing their successful instructional tools and experiences with the global community. This will help educators forge links with colleagues from across the US and the world, forming dynamic physical and virtual communities.”

“No one questions the importance of learning, yet over 100 million people worldwide do not have access to a primary education,“ said Scott McNealy, Chairman and Co-Founder of Sun Microsystems and Founder of Curriki. “Today's announcement is the epitome of the principles on which Curriki was founded: open source and community-built content. With AARP educator-member’s participation and resources, Curriki will become the world’s fastest growing, most comprehensive and highest quality open source education portal. Together, NRTA and Curriki are bridging the education divide.”
