About Dr. Raul Deju
Dr. Raul Deju is a Partner at Brightstar Capital Partners and a Member of the Company’s Investment Committee. He currently serves as Board Chair of Amerit Fleet Solutions, Vice Chair of Texas Water Supply Company and Board Member of QualTek, all Brightstar portfolio companies.
Dr. Deju is a native of Cuba who migrated to the United States in his early teens. He served as the founding director, instructor, and financial supporter of the Institute of Entrepreneurial Leadership where he taught entrepreneurship to many students leading to the current online course on Entrepreneurship.
Dr. Deju has been involved as an officer of many companies large and small. Raul was the President and Chief Operating Officer of EnergySolutions a company that Raul and his team took public into the NYSE on November 15, 2007. Previously, he was President and COO of ISG Resources, a construction materials company that he and two associates eventually merged into Headwaters, a public company.
Dr. Deju was also one of the founders and CEO of Isadra, a start-up technology venture that developed state-of-the-art search code in the early days of electronic commerce and was sold to VerticalNet. Raul also served as President of several major entities within the Waste Management family of companies and served as Senior Vice President of IT Corporation (now called Chicago Bridge & Iron) when it initially became a public company listed on the NYSE.
Raul has extensive international experience managing European and Latin American subsidiaries and has served as the US Member of the Board of Governors of the World Nuclear Association. He also has served in Advisory Committees for the US Secretary of Commerce and the US EPA Administrator during both the President Bush Sr. and the Clinton Administrations.
Raul has been named one of the 25 Most Influential Hispanics in the San Francisco Bay Area and the recipient of the 2015 John F. Kennedy Lifetime of Entrepreneurship Award. He is the author of seven books, his most recent being the story of how he and 35 of his BFFs had the mojo to succeed. This book titled “We Got Mojo” was published in 2016.
Dr. Deju received his B.S. degree in Mathematics and Physics from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. He was also part of a select NASA sponsored group to complete an advanced academic program in Space Physics at Columbia University, and subsequently completed his Ph.D. degree in Engineering and Geosciences from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology.
Dr. Deju is active in philanthropy, including the New Deju University House at his Alma Mater, a major initiative to tie Water Management and Artificial Intelligence at a new academic/research center. He is also a sponsor of a major cancer center being built in the SF Bay Area.
The Entrepreneurship classes in this program and several other activities to support the disabled veteran and the Latino Communities are particularly important parts of Dr. Deju’s endeavors.
