This is one lesson in a series on Gandhi’s life and the independence movement in India. The assignment is the third step in preparing for a Socratic seminar that is designed for the end of the unit. Although the first two pages of the lesson are classroom specific, the rest of the materials are very useful. They include an activity that helps students learn to paraphrase (powerpoint must be downloaded separately), a sample seminar dialogue with scoring guides, and the third section of Gandhi’s letter that could be used as independent practice in class or at home.
Overall, this is a valuable resource that challenges students to work on their analytical and communication skills in the context of studying Gandhi. While the activity is focused on Gandhi, the format of the Socratic seminar is one that could be used with many other topics in a Social Studies course.
