The Matchstick problem has students calculate the number of matchsticks that can be made from a tree, given the size of the matchstick and tree. The activity provides an answer key along with a grading rubric. In addition, sample solutions, both graded and ungraded, are included. This is an activity that can be used to assess student understanding of real-world math problems involving volumes of cylinders, cones and spheres. It is a great resource and can easily be used in a classroom setting.
